The Eureka Springs Tourism Cooperative (Co-op), a private group of local tourism professionals, recently announced its launch of an agressive campaign to reintroduce their Victorian village as "the wedding capitqal of the south" to new resients of Northwest Arkansas.
"when we realize that more than twenty five percent of our current wedding market is considered as 'new arrivals' to the region, we need to 'bang our drum' loudly and often, " said Jack Moyer, chairman of the Co-op's wedding subcommittee, "Our drum beat needs to echo the fact that we have been and continue to be a wedding mecca. We can not rest on our laurels."
Supporting the "wedding mecca" claim, Moyer noted that in 2005 more than 4,100 wedding licenses had been issued in the Carroll County Western District Courthouse located in downtown Eureka Springs. That represent nearly two licenses for every one citizen of this turn-of-the-century Ozark community.
"Eureka Springs' Thorncrown Chapel has truly become the wedding chapel icon throughout the country if not the world," added Mardell Bland, subcommittee member. "It is without a doubt the cornerstone of our local wedding market making Eureka Springs a legitimate, well respected wedding destination."
Seizing upon this fact, Bland explained that the Co-op has emraced Throncrown Chapel as a wedding partner. In doing so, the Co-op has extended the education of those seeking wedding options to include not only Thorncrown Chapelbut also the numerous wedding and reception sites throughout the community.
The Co-op's campaign includes an advertising program in Celebrate Northwest Arkansas magazine, an aggressive public relations effort, the enhancement of this web site, and a citywide distribution program of referral information.
The Co-op is made up of representatives from the following Eureka Springs tourism businesses: The 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa; The 1905 Basin Park Hotel; Best Western Eureka Inn; Best Western Inn of the Ozarks; Holiday Inn Express; Bavarian Inn; The Great Passion Play; Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge; The Pine Mountain Jamboree; The Ozark Mountain Hoe-Down; Blue Spring Heritage Center; and Gavioli Chapel, the Co-op's newest member. Over the past five years the Co-op has been responsible for investing nearly one-quarter of a million dollars in advertising and promotion of Eureka Springs as a tourism destination.
"Each year the Co-op focuses on a target market and spends our own dollars trying to make an impact in that market," Johnice Cross, subcommittee member, said. "Last year we focused on The Great Passion Play and the Beyond Dickens Christmas Celebration. We would like to think that our private efforts served a vital role in boosting their attendance and impacting their winter holiday event. Both successes put additional heads in beds, bodies in restaurant booths, and shoppers in local stores...our goal with all of advertising and promotional efforts."
Moyer concluded by saying, "The Co-op has made an impact in our local tourism industry over the past five years. The high tide we create raises the boats of everyone in Eureka Springs; it's that simple. The shared ideas of our twelve members with our local Chamber of Commerce and the CAPC (City Advertising and Promotion Commission) during our monthly meeting have made and are making a positive difference in this community we call home. We have every reason to believe that this year, our local wedding industry will be positively impacted as well."
